Art Zoyd's Unique Soundscape

Released in 1979, "Musique Pour L'Odyssée" is the second studio album from the French avant-garde band Art Zoyd. The album was recorded in January of the same year at Overijse / Hennuyères Studios in Belgium. It was produced by Art Zoyd and the Atem label, featuring a distinctive blend of chamber rock and Rock in Opposition (RIO) elements.

Collaborative Efforts

This album brings together an impressive lineup of musicians. Gérard Hourbette plays the viola and is the primary composer for the record. Thierry Zaboïtzeff contributes with bass guitar, cello, and vocals, also acting as a composer. Other band members include Jean-Pierre Soarez on trumpet, Franck Cardon on violin, Michel Thomas on saxophone, and guest musicians from Univers Zero: Daniel Denis on percussion and Michel Berckmans on oboe and bassoon. This collaboration emphasizes the cross-pollination of talents between the two groups.

Musical Composition

The album consists of three major compositions. The first side is dominated by the 17-minute mythological suite titled "Musique Pour L'Odyssée," composed by Gérard Hourbette. This piece showcases the album's dark, haunting atmosphere, blending influences from 20th-century classical composers such as Bartók, Stravinsky, and Ligeti. The second side features Thierry Zaboïtzeff's menacing 10-minute piece "Bruit, Silence - Bruit, Repos" and Hourbette's "Trio 'Lettre D'Automne'." The compositions utilize dissonant acoustic strings and Gothic brass fanfares, creating a unique soundscape that challenges traditional rock norms.

Production Details

The album was recorded by Eric Faes and Pierre Desmedt, adding a distinct quality to the production. The sleeve illustration was created by Patrice Jean Baptiste, contributing to the album's visual identity. "Musique Pour L'Odyssée" was released under the catalog numbers ATEM 7002 and ATEM 7006.
