The Beginning Of The End (El Principio Del Fin)
Atila, a trio formed in 1973 in Girona, Spain, created a distinctive blend of rock and progressive rock. The group consisted of Eduardo Niebla on guitar, Joan Punyet on drums, and Francisco Ortega on keyboards. In 1975, they released their only vinyl album, The Beginning of the End (El Principio del Fin), under the small label New Promotion. This release is particularly interesting due to its structure and instrumentation.
The Beginning of the End consists of a continuous instrumental piece, clocking in at approximately 30 minutes. It is divided into indexed groove markers, with nine tracks on each side of the vinyl. However, these divisions do not indicate distinct songs but rather serve as segments of a singular musical journey. The album features extended jams, characterized by long guitar and organ solos, all built around an organ-driven sound. The musicianship on display is marked by improvisational qualities, reflecting the nature of live recording.
One notable moment occurs around the midpoint, where a drum solo lasts about three minutes, providing a contrasting dynamic to the ongoing instrumental texture. This break highlights the individual talents of the drummer, Joan Punyet, while maintaining the overall flow of the piece. The album also incorporates themes that draw from classical music, enriching its complexity.
The original pressing of The Beginning of the End was produced in a very limited run, making it a rare find among collectors. In 2005, the album was reissued on vinyl, allowing a new audience to experience Atila's music. A further reissue occurred in 2019, which included a bonus CD featuring an alternate take of the album. This reissue effort reflects the ongoing interest in Atila's unique sound and their contribution to the progressive rock scene.
Atila's album was released on vinyl in 1975 and is characterized by its continuous instrumental format.
