Orgasm
"Orgasm" is the only studio album released by the British heavy psych and hard rock project Head Machine in 1970. Released on the Major Minor label, this album carries the catalog number SMLP 69. The project was initiated as an offshoot of the band The Gods. Key figures in Head Machine included Ken Hensley, who was credited as "Ken Leslie," along with drummer Lee Kerslake and bassist John Glascock, both of whom would later gain fame in Uriah Heep and Jethro Tull, respectively.
The album features a blend of proto-metal, heavy blues, and psychedelic rock. Its sound is characterized by aggressive Hammond organ runs and heavy guitar solos delivered by Hensley. The overall composition serves as a bridge between The Gods' sound and the early works of Uriah Heep and Toe Fat. Each track showcases a combination of driving rhythms and heavy arrangements that reflect the era's heavy rock scene.
Seven tracks comprise the album, including "Climax You Tried To Take It All," "Make The Feeling Last," and the nine-minute title track "Orgasm." The album's musical narrative shifts between intense rock anthems and more introspective pieces, demonstrating the band's versatility. Vocals are shared among band members, with David Paramor taking the lead on multiple tracks while also contributing as producer and songwriter.
Due to contractual obligations with EMI and Cliff Richard's management, the musicians adopted pseudonyms for the album's release. This choice reflects the complexities of the music industry during that period, particularly for emerging artists. The use of alternate names did not hinder the musicians' ability to create a distinctive sound that resonates with fans of heavy rock and psychedelic music.
Head Machine's "Orgasm" was recorded in the UK, showcasing a regional sound that is representative of the late 1960s and early 1970s rock scene. The album remains a point of interest for collectors and enthusiasts of the genre, particularly those exploring the beginnings of proto-metal.
The album features a total of seven tracks, with the title track "Orgasm" clocking in at nine minutes long.
