Stealin' Home
"Stealin' Home" is the fourth studio album released by British rock band Babe Ruth in June 1975. This album marks their debut on Capitol Records, carrying the catalog numbers EST 11451 and ST-11451. Recorded primarily at Morgan Studios and Chappell Studios in London, the album showcases the band's evolving sound, characterized by a blend of hard rock, blues rock, and progressive elements.
The album features a significant lineup change. Bernie Marsden joins as the lead guitarist, replacing Alan Shacklock. Marsden, who later gained fame as a member of Whitesnake, brings a fresh energy to the band. His guitar work is prominent throughout the album, delivering fiery solos that complement the band's hard-hitting style. This album also serves as the final studio release for Jenny Haan, the powerful lead vocalist, and founding bassist Dave Hewitt, marking the end of an era for the band.
"Stealin' Home" consists of nine tracks, each showcasing the band's diverse sound. The opening track, "It'll Happen In Time," sets a driving pace that carries through the album. "Fascination" is a hard rock anthem, while "Caught At The Plate" introduces a fun, baseball-themed funk element. The lengthy track "Elusive" stands out as a progressive rock tour-de-force at 6 minutes and 40 seconds. The album concludes with "Tomorrow (Joining Of The Day)," which features orchestral arrangements by Alan Shacklock, adding a symphonic layer to the band's sound.
Steve Rowland produced the album, ensuring a polished sound that complements the band's musical direction. Keyboards played by Steve Gurl enhance the overall texture of the tracks. The sound engineering by Ashley Howe contributes to the clarity and impact of the music. The inclusion of string and horn arrangements enriches the listening experience, particularly on "Tomorrow."
"Stealin' Home" reflects the band's transition during a pivotal moment in their career, with new influences and musical directions coming into play. It was recorded in the spring of 1975 at Morgan Studios in Willesden, London and Chappell Studios in London, UK.
