Introduction to Triad

Released in October 1972, Triad is the second album by the British power trio Spontaneous Combustion. The band, which originally went by the name Transient Sand, was managed by John House, a close associate of Greg Lake from Emerson, Lake & Palmer. This connection played a crucial role in securing a recording contract with Harvest Records for the group in late 1971.

Musical Direction and Production

With Triad, the band took a step forward in their musical evolution. Unlike their debut, this album features a heavier and harder-edged rock sound. The trio self-produced the album, applying techniques they learned while working with Greg Lake on their earlier efforts. The lineup comprises Gary Margetts on guitar and lead vocals, Tris Margetts on bass guitar and VCS 3 synthesizer, and Tony Brock on drums and percussion. This combination of talents contributed to a fresh and dynamic sound that distinguishes the album within the rock genre.

Track Highlights

The album opens with "Spaceship," a track that sets a bold tone. The song "Brainstorm" showcases the band's ability to blend rock with jazz influences, reflecting their progressive rock roots. "Child Life" and "Love and Laughter" offer a varied emotional landscape, while "Pan" introduces intriguing instrumentation. The multi-part "Monolith" serves as a centerpiece, demonstrating their knack for composition and arrangement.

Visual Presentation

The sleeve design for Triad was created by Paul May, with photography by Pete Kibbles. The visual elements complement the album's sound, encapsulating the band's artistic vision at the time. The artwork reflects the psychedelic and progressive aesthetics prevalent in the early 1970s.

Conclusion

Triad was released on vinyl as an LP under the Harvest label in Italy. The album features a total of seven tracks, including "Monolith Parts 1, 2 & 3," which showcases the band's progressive rock sensibilities.
