Introduction to Photos Of Ghosts

Released in October 1973, Photos Of Ghosts is the third studio album by the Italian band Premiata Forneria Marconi, commonly known as PFM. This album marks the band's first foray into the English language, expanding their reach beyond Italy. It was released on the Numero Uno label in Italy and later on Manticore Records internationally, a label co-founded by Greg Lake of Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

Collaboration and Production

PFM's transition to English was facilitated by Greg Lake, who had experienced the band's music during an Italian tour. He played a crucial role in bringing PFM to Manticore, hoping to introduce them to English-speaking audiences. The album reworks several tracks from their earlier Italian albums, notably Storia di un Minuto and Per un Amico. The lyrics were adapted into English by Peter Sinfield, known for his work with King Crimson. For instance, the track "Appena un Po'" was transformed into "River of Life," while "Geranio" became "Promenade the Puzzle." Sinfield also produced two of the tracks on the album.

Musical Composition

The album showcases PFM's signature blend of progressive rock elements. It features intricate musical passages, displaying the musicianship of each member. Giorgio Piazza plays bass, while Franz Di Cioccio handles drums and vocals. Franco Mussida contributes guitar and vocals, and Flavio Premoli provides keyboards and vocals. Mauro Pagani enhances the sound with his violin and woodwind instruments. The arrangement of the tracks reflects the band's early influences while incorporating new lyrical themes.

Chart Performance

Photos Of Ghosts achieved a notable milestone as the first album by an Italian rock group to chart in the United States. It reached number 180 on the Billboard 200 in November 1973. This commercial success marked a significant step for PFM as they sought to establish themselves in the international music scene.

Album Artwork

The visual presentation of Photos Of Ghosts is as carefully crafted as its music. The artwork was designed by Julia Fryer and Nick Darke, while the photography was handled by Angela Williams. The cover art complements the themes of the album, providing a visual representation of the band's artistic vision.

Photos Of Ghosts was released on vinyl as an LP album in 1973.
